NNAISENSE is an outgrowth of my academic labs in Munich and in Switzerland, where we have been working on Artificial General Intelligence since my first publication on "learning to learn" or “recursive self-improvement” in 1987. NNAISENSE is pronounced like "nascence," because it's about the birth of a general purpose Neural Network-based Artificial Intelligence (NNAI). It has 5 co-founders (CEO Faustino Gomez, Jan Koutnik, Jonathan Masci, Bas Steunebrink, and myself), brilliant advisors (Sepp Hochreiter, Marcus Hutter, Jaan Tallinn), outstanding employees, and revenues through ongoing state-of-the-art applications in industry and finance. We believe that the current commercial success of our algorithms is just the beginning, and that we can go far beyond what's possible today, through novel variants of meta-learning and artificial curiosity and creativity and optimal program search and large reinforcement learning recurrent neural networks, to pull off the big practical breakthrough that will change everything, in line with my old motto since the 1970s: "build an AI smarter than myself such that I can retire."How is it different from DeepMind? Of course, I cannot speak for other companies. However, DeepMind is heavily influenced by former students of my lab. In particular, DeepMind's first PhDs in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning were former PhD students in my research group at IDSIA, one of them DeepMind's co-founder (Shane Legg), one of them the first employee (Daan Wierstra). (The other two co-founders were not from my lab and had different backgrounds in biological neuroscience and business.) Other former PhD students of mine joined DeepMind later, including Alex Graves, first author of DeepMind's recent Nature paper, and Tom Schaul, co-author of my lab's 2010 paper on Atari-Go. BTW, thanks to Google DeepMind for generously funding our research!
