TheEuropeanUnion(EU)wasChina'stoptradingpartnerlastyearafterpushingouttheUnitedStates.Butanti-coronavirusclosureslimitedEU-Chinatradeinthefirstthreemonthsof2020,businessadvisinggroupDezanShira&Associatessays.
RajivBiswasisAsia-PacificchiefeconomistwithIHSMarkitinSingapore.HesaidfactoriesinEuropeboughtfewerpartsfromChinaandshippedfewerfinishedgoods,suchascars,backtoChina.
TheUnitedStateshasaweakertradepartnershipwithChinabecauseofincreasedimporttariffs.AsharpdecreaseinconsumerbuyingduringshutdownsacrosstheUnitedStatesfurtherreducedtrade.
Biswasadded,"thetradewar,andlockdownsthisyearhaveaffectedChina-U.S.trade.Andalso,withtheEU,sinceMarch,AprilandmostofMay,mostofEuropewasheavilyaffectedandinlockdown."

ASEANmembercountriesandChinahadalsoreducedeachother'scostswithano-tarifftradedealthattookeffectin2010.ASEANandChinaareexpectedtosignanotherdeal,theRegionalComprehensiveEconomicPartnership,toimprovetradefurtherlaterthisyear.
RisingwagesamongSoutheastAsia's640millionpeoplepermitgrowingnumbersofChinesegoods,suchassmartphones,todowellinthemarket.IndustrializationofASEANmembercountrieshascreatedfactoriesthatbuymaterialsfromChinatomakefinishedgoods.TheproductsarethenoftensoldinChina.
ChineseimportsfromVietnamrose24percentinthefirstthreemonthsof2020comparedtothesametimeperiodof2019.ThevalueofgoodsfromIndonesiarose13percent.TheDezanShiragroupsaysthatincreaseisbecauseof"increasinglyintegratedsupplychains."
Chineseimportsofpartsforelectronicdevicesroseabout26percentearlythisyear.BiswassaidthatfactoriesinMalaysiaandThailandwerestillabletoproducethemwhenEuropeansuppliershadproblems.
ChinastilllookedtoSoutheastAsiaforpalmoil,rubberandprocessedfood,saidSongSengWun.HeisaneconomistwiththebankCIMBinSingapore.Hesaid,"Gradually,witheconomiessteppingoutfromthelockdownandgettingbackontheirfeet,thesethingsarestartingtoseeeconomicactivitiespickingup."
