She is best known for going undercover in an insane asylum in New York to expose the unfair treatment of patients. Her reports shocked the public as they revealed the sheer brutality and violence that patients suffered on a daily basis, leading to New York City’s improving conditions for the mentally ill. In doing so, she pioneered a path for women in newspapers and launched into a career of serious investigative journalism for the rest of her life.
